On Way To School
An 18-year-old high school student was shot and killed on his way to school in Capitol Heights, Maryland, according to authorities.

Marckel Norman Ross was found near Central High School at about 6:50 a.m on Tuesday morning by Prince George County Police, WJLA reports. Police are searching for evidence and a motive for the killing, though NBC News reports that Ross' mom, Elizabeth, said her son had been bullied.

Ross' father, Norman Thompson, said his son wanted to work in the fashion industry. Ross ran track and was a happy, normal kid, his father said.

"He was a kind person," Norman Thompson told WJLA. "That's all. Very kind."

Principal Charoscar Coleman called Ross' killing a "tremendous loss for the school community," according to WTOP.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to this young man's family and friends, along with our fervent hope that those responsible for his death will soon be brought to justice," the school said in a statement obtained by WTOP.

Bula Ola, an attendant at a gas station near where the shooting took place, told the Washington Times that the area "is not safe."

"It’s very dangerous,” Ola said. “It’s a tough place. Very tough.”
