Flint, Mich is the country's most dangerous city according to an analysis of FBI data. |
For cities with perpetually high crime rates, 2011 was an especially bad year.
An analysis of FBI crime statistics by 24/7 Wall Street reveals that in many of the most dangerous cities in America, such as St. Louis and Memphis, violent crime actually went up. That goes against a national trend of lower crime rates compared to 2010.
24/7 Wall Street looked at the numbers for violent crimes including murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. They then looked at cities with at least 100,000 people to come up with their list. That formula put two Michigan cities, Flint and Detroit at the top of the pile.
The site's list is similar to one compiled by CQ Press last year, which gave Flint the notorious distinction of being the country's most dangerous. That ranking included more categories of violent crimes than the 24/7 list and was based on cities with at least 75,000 people.
